This Automotive Systems course is an introduction to today’s automobiles, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles. Topics include exposure to various pieces of automotive shop equipment and details of the automotive service business. A working knowledge of basic automotive components and general maintenance necessary for vehicle operations will be emphasized. This course also promotes a basic understanding of alternative fuel and HEV vehicle technology. Following this course, the student will be able to: Identify and demonstrate safety procedures in an automotive shop environment. Perform electronic service information research. Identify Vehicle Identification Numbering systems. Identify mechanic certification and testing requirements. Identify automotive technician, legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities. Identify and demonstrate proper use of basic hand, power, and measuring tools. Identify and demonstrate proper use and repair of automotive fasteners. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of automotive related math and science principles. Identify and explain gasoline engine operating principles and major components. Demonstrate proper vehicle lifting procedures. Identify and explain automotive lubrication and cooling system operation and service. Perform basic automotive preventative and scheduled maintenance operations. Identify alternative fuels used in the transportation industry. Identify E.V.
