This Engine Performance I course provides an introductory study of the theory and operation of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) ignition system and the fuel system. Topics include: ICE ignition systems, engine controls and sensor, fuels systems, and service and replacement procedures and techniques. Following this course, the student will be able to: Explain safety regulations and their importance. Operate equipment according to safety protocols. Use appropriate attire and protective equipment. Read, interpret, and use technical documents for equipment and components within a mechanical system. Use basic algebra to solve problems involving engine performance. Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while in the labs. Explain four-stroke cycle fundamentals and volumetric efficiency. Identify and explain operation of fuel injection systems. Identify and explain operation of ignition systems. Identify and explain operation of vehicle emission systems. Identify and explain operation of sensors and actuators. Retrieve DTCs and freeze frame data with scan tool. Diagnose fuel and ignition faults.
